Filmmaker, Founder, Father
Michael Wohl is a filmmaker, author, creative technologist, and storyteller whose work has spent decades exploring the intersection of art, technology, and human connection.
He is best known as one of the original designers of Apple’s groundbreaking editing platform Final Cut Pro, where he helped create tools that transformed modern filmmaking and empowered a generation of independent creators. But his career has extended far beyond software design, spanning award-winning narrative films, documentaries, immersive media, education, live performance, writing, and collaborative creative ventures.
Michael co-founded Bare Witness Productions, an experimental filmmaking collective that fused theatrical improvisation with cinematic storytelling to pioneer new approaches to performance-driven filmmaking. His films and media projects have screened internationally and received honors from festivals and organizations including SXSW, Slamdance, Cinequest, the Austin Film Festival, and the CINE Golden Eagle Awards.
As a producer and director, he has led projects ranging from independent features and comedic shorts to large-scale documentary initiatives, including several years spent documenting Ethiopia’s Agricultural Transformation Agency in partnership with The Synergos Institute and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Alongside his filmmaking work, Michael has become a widely respected voice in visual storytelling and creative technology. He is the author of more than a dozen books on filmmaking and post-production, a longtime instructor at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television, and a frequent speaker at Sundance, NAB, SXSW, IBC, and other international conferences.
His current focus is the development of original animated storytelling that combines emotionally grounded narratives with innovative hybrid production techniques inspired by both hand-crafted animation traditions and emerging digital workflows.
Michael lives in Los Angeles with his family, where he continues building projects centered on imagination, craft, and community.
